Announcing the fall 2012 pick for our community read project, On the Same Page–Isabel Wilkerson’s The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration.
What is the power of one book? Can it do more than enlighten and entertain individual readers? Can it impact the heart and soul of a community, help us to open new lines of communication and lay the groundwork for a stronger and better Forsyth County? We believe that the On the Same Page community read project has potential to do just that. On the Same Page seeks to broaden appreciation of literature through the shared experience of reading and discussing a single work of literature. It offers us a unique opportunity to see things from a different perspective, one that will only expand our understanding of the world around us.

Welcome to the 11th annual On the Same Page season. This year’s selection, The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson is a fascinating look into the motivations behind the largest movement of African Americans in our nation’s history. I first heard about this impressive work in the Fall of 2011 from a friend who stated that it was something that I would enjoy reading and he was correct. Once I began reading it, I couldn’t put it down.
My sincere hope is that the community will gain a better understanding of this movement and its impact on American culture. To this end, we have partnered with the Reynolda House Museum of American Art as they celebrate North Carolina artist (and participant in the Great Migration) Romare Bearden through an exhibition of his collage masterpiece, A Black Odyssey. As in years past, the various OTSP programs throughout the County (and online) present opportunities to engage with others in conversation and to strengthen our bonds as a community. Let the journey begin!
